Collaborate as you would in the real gaming industry

Even though you will specialise in one of the three tracks, you will work closely with students from other disciplines throughout the programme. In a simulated game studio, you will form multidisciplinary teams – just as you would in a professional setting.

This will enable you to develop your own skills, and at the same time learn how to collaborate and communicate effectively within a team to execute results-oriented projects.

    Frequently asked questions

Which study track is suitable for me, and can you switch tracks during the study programme?

The choice depends on what you like most and where your talents lie. Programming is for students who like coding and solving technical problems. Visual Arts is for creative students who want to design 3D worlds and characters. Design & Production is for students who come up with game ideas and coordinate productions.

It is not possible to switch tracks during Creative Media and Game Technologies. Before the study programme starts, you choose a study track and follow it during the whole course. This is because each track has its own specialist educational programme as from year 1.

    What is a guild?

A guild is a workshop in which students of Creative Media and Game Technologies explore a specific topic within game development. These workshops are extra-curricular and are therefore not obligatory and are held on Fridays. Guilds focus on topics such as VR development, pixel art, game audio, narrative design, shader programming or esports.

You come together with other students from different study tracks and study years to share knowledge, do workshops, and work on your own projects. It is a way to develop skills outside your own study track, network with students who have the same interests, and experiment with new tools and techniques. Although you do not have to take part in guilds, they offer an extra chance to keep developing your passion for game development alongside your standard courses at BUas.

Should you be able to program or draw before starting Creative Media and Game Technologies?

Yes, you must have experience in your chosen study track before you start. As part of the selection procedure you will do an intake assignment (portfolio assignment) in which you show  that you have the basic skills. Programmers build a game in C++; Visual Artists make 3D models; and Designers come up with a game concept. You do not need to be an expert, but you must show that you have a good grasp of the basics and are passionate about learning.

The assignments can be found under the heading ‘selection criteria’ on the following pages: Programming, Visual Arts and Design & Production

Can you release your own game during your studies?

Yes, every student releases their own game during their Creative Media and Game Technologies studies. In year 3, students publish their game on Steam, as part of their portfolio. BUas supports them in this game development and offers guidance through BUas Startup Support for students who want to start their own game studio during their studies.

Can you work alongside this study programme?

Yes, you can work alongside Creative Media and Game Technologies, but this asks for good planning. The study load is, on average, 40 hours a week, including about 20 contact hours a week on fixed days. You spend the days on which you do not have any lessons working on projects on your own or with your team, which you can plan more flexibly.
