Research vision

With our research, we want to move the world forward. It is an important part of our day-to-day activities. Read more about the underlying vision of research at BUas here.

At Breda University of Applied Sciences, we foster a dynamic synergy between research, education, and society. We treat all three as equally important, mutually reinforcing, and interconnected functions that contribute to industry, students, academia, and society at large, helping to shape a better world.

Today’s global society is facing complex challenges. BUas’ fundamental and applied research helps industry partners to innovate and transform, and it enables our students to better understand complex societal issues and come up with solutions.

Research & Development

BUas purposely refers to its research function – one of its two primary functions – as Research & Development/Design (abbreviated as R&D) to reflect that we not only engage in research but also in the development and design of knowledge(-based) products. Our R&D activities are varied, ranging from concept development to prototyping and from fundamental to applied research.

Central questions

The central questions that guide our activities in research and development are:

  • Empowering students: How can we provide our students with the strongest possible foundation for independence and resilience in a rapidly changing world?
  • Supporting the domains: With what knowledge and products do we support the domains – in which our students graduate – in their further sustainable development?
  • Designing original contributions: How can our research activities make contributions beyond the industry’s expectations?

Research vision

Based on the three central questions that guide our R&D activities, we have formulated the research vision below:

  • At BUas, we create a dynamic synergy between R&D, education, and society. We see education and R&D as equally important, mutually reinforcing, and interconnected functions that help to address complex challenges and thrive through both in-domain and cross-domain connections with education, academia, and society within our learning communities.

  •  In 2029 (or before), R&D will be fully integrated into all our educational programmes and learning communities, ensuring that every student and lecturer engages with and benefits from research and development activities, ranging from evidence-based learning materials to active involvement in R&D projects. This integration enriches the learning experience of students and plays a crucial role in empowering them to lead domain and societal transformations.

  • We have identified five key R&D themes which are directly linked to major societal challenges and which are central to our institute’s R&D agenda: Places and Flows, Experiences, Digital Realities, Artificial Intelligence en Sustainability Transitions.
These themes ensure that our R&D is high-quality, versatile and impactful.

  • Partnerships with industry, government, societal organisations, and alumni are crucial. These relationships provide practical insights and opportunities for our students and ensure that our R&D has a direct, meaningful impact on society.

  • By fostering a culture of innovation, co-creation and collaboration, BUas develops, applies, and disseminates knowledge and knowledge products that address and resolve current and future societal challenges.
