What is the difference between the statutory tuition fee and the institutional tuition fee?

Statutory tuition fee
This is what you pay if you:

  • have the Dutch nationality or the nationality of another country that is part of the EEA, or the Surinamese or Swiss nationality and
  • have not yet obtained a bachelor's degree from a government-funded programme in the Netherlands at the start of the academic year.

If these conditions do not apply to you, there may be other conditions under which you are eligible for the statutory tuition fee. To find out, please check out the tuition fee regulation.

Institutional tuition fee
This is what you pay if you:

  • do not have the Dutch nationality or the nationality of another country that is part of the EEA, or the Surinamese or Swiss nationality or
  • have already obtained a bachelor's degree from a government-funded programme in the Netherlands at the start of the academic year.

NON-EU students, please take into account the costs of a visa and/or a residence permit. You will also have to transfer proof of sufficient means of support. Read more about the immigration procedure

Why do study programmes with the distinctive feature ‘Small-Scale and Intensive Education’ charge a higher fee?

Distinctive Feature: Small Scale Intensive Education

A number of our degree programmes have been accredited by the NVAO and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science with the special feature "Small Scale and Intensive Education". We are proud of this. This means that these programmes offer more than the standard curriculum: you will receive more intensive guidance, work in small groups, and benefit from additional facilities and educational activities. As a result, the tuition fees for these programmes are higher than the regular tuition fees.

The distinctive feature applies to the following programmes:

  • Creative Business
  • Creative Media and Game Technologies
  • Applied Data Science & AI

You can easily check what this means financially for you using our tuition fee calculator.

When do you need to pay the tuition fee?

Your tuition fee must be paid by 31 August at the latest. If you do not do so, you will not be able to start your studies on 1 September. So make sure you have fulfilled all registration requirements.

Is everything in order? Then you can print your proof of enrolment yourself. This is important for your personal administration and possibly for your employer or other institutions.
