European Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum underscored the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing
The European Sustainable Tourism Mobility Forum, organised by Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) in collaboration with the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions (NBTC), brought together a diverse group of experts, policymakers, and industry professionals on 26 May at the green BUas campus in Breda.

With a strong focus on accelerating the transition towards sustainable tourism mobility, the forum offered an inspiring day filled with knowledge exchange, dialogue, and valuable networking opportunities. Through interactive sessions and panel discussions, key topics such as climate risks, business model innovation, data exchange, and ethical transitions were explored.
The event opened with speeches from Nina Nesterova, (Professor of Sustainable Tourism and Transport at BUas), and Attila Benedek (Senior Policy Advisor European Parliament). The programme continued with Ben Lynam from The Travel Foundation and Camille Mutrelle from Transport & Environment, sharing the latest trends and developments in tourism and transport.
Alternative futures for tourism mobility
During five interactive sessions, participants engaged in discussions on alternative future scenarios and practical solutions to the sector’s challenges. Experts from organisations including NS, KLM, Corendon, Austria Tourism, Better Places, TU Delft, Tilburg University, and the European Travel Commission shared their insights and strategies.
Perry Hobson, Director of the Academy for Tourism at BUas, stated: “The next step towards sustainable mobility in tourism requires close collaboration between education and the industry. That’s why we are proud that BUas could host this forum today, where valuable connections for the future are being established.”
In a concluding session, moderated by Attila Benedek, the day’s insights were brought together. Finally, keynote speaker Koert van Mensvoort from Next Nature challenged participants to think beyond traditional frameworks by sharing his vision for the future of travel and transport.
The forum underscored the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing to accelerate the transition to sustainable tourism mobility.
“From rethinking consumption for sustainable and just tourism mobility transition to unlocking data potential, this event showcased the power of cross-sector dialogue in shaping climate-resilient tourism future,” concluded Nina Nesterova, Professor of Sustainable Tourism and Transport at BUas.
