The AI Strategy Compass was created by Ines Springael, Programme Manager Meaningful AI Endeavours at BUas. It is a flexible framework designed to help educational institutes and other companies move from scattered AI pilot projects to a fully integrated, strategic approach.
What is the AI Strategy Compass?
The AI Strategy Compass is built on six connected components:
- Urgency – Why do we need to act now?
- Ambition + Strategy – What is our vision and roadmap?
- AI Pioneers Team – Who will lead the way?
- Programmatic Approach – How do we plan and manage it?
- Communication – How do we share and involve everyone?
- Cultural Change – How do we make AI part of our DNA?
These components help guide a balanced approach to both the technical and human sides of change. It’s not just about installing new tools, it’s about building shared understanding, trust, and readiness for a future where AI is part of our daily work and learning.
Why does this matter?
Many universities still approach AI in a fragmented way, with small, isolated experiments. BUas chose to do it differently. The AI Strategy Compass allows us to embed AI in everything we do, from teaching and research to student services and operations. This framework is not a fixed recipe. It’s designed to grow with us. It offers a clear structure, but also the flexibility to adapt to our specific context and culture.
A human-centred approach
What makes this framework special is that it connects strategic planning with cultural transformation. We know that successful change doesn’t happen through plans alone, it happens through people: through connection, collaboration, and shared purpose. At BUas, we see AI implementation not just as a tech project, but as an opportunity to rethink how we learn, work, and innovate together. The AI Strategy Compass helps us do exactly that.
