Study overview of the specialisation
The first year of the specialisation is all about getting to know the industry, building a network, and applying the theories in projects. The courses you take cover the fan culture of a particular sport and/or esport, project management related to organising an event, setting up a livestream, and exploring the business side of sports and esports.
You will also dive into the on-site and online fan experience of sports and esports, and then, at the end of the first specialisation year, you will carry out a large project from A to Z with your group for a real client. You will develop a concept, involve stakeholders, create and work with a budget, organise the event, and evaluate how it went.
To get to know each other and the industry better, you will go on two field trips. One trip will be a two-day trip to Belgium and the other will be to Berlin in the middle of the final project. You will also regularly spend a day visiting organisations in the field and we will invite guest speakers to immerse the students in the world of sports and esports.
The second year of the specialisation is all about placements. In Sport & Esports, you will typically complete two 20-week placements. This will allow you to discover where your interests lie and expand your network in the industry. It is also possible to do one 40-week placement if that is what you are more interested in.
You can also choose to spend 20 weeks on an exchange programme abroad at one of our partner universities and do a 20-week placement. This academic year will therefore allow you to expand your network and apply what you learned in school the previous year.
In the final part of the programme, you will take a minor and continue to develop your skills in your graduation project. The order in which you do this is up to you.
You have the following minor options that tie in well with the specialisation:
- Minor of Esports Event & Media Management: English-taught minor focused on developing your strategic skills in esports, in which you organise a real esports event with livestreaming for your client.
- NextGen Topsport Events: Dutch-taught minor in which you learn how to organise a top-level sporting event for the younger generation, looking at mobility, experience, impact, and digitisation.
- Other minors: You can also choose other minors at BUas or other universities of applied sciences.
For your graduation project, you will look for your own assignment, in which you prove that you are ready for the professional field. This assignment can be very practical in nature, helping a real client with a problem, challenge, or advice. This can be very diverse and, as the programme progresses, you will discover where your interests and expertise lie in order to bring this assignment to a successful conclusion.
After completing the graduation assignment, you will take an oral final exam, in which you defend your approach and the results of the graduation assignment and demonstrate that you are ready to start as a Sports & Esports professional.
