BUas becomes the First European Educational Institution with Claude for Education: AI for Everyone
Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) is the first higher education institution in the
EU to make Claude for Education Anthropic's AI platform available institution-wide. With this step, BUas integrates generative AI in a way that aligns with its vision for future-proof and ethical education.

- Data Science & AI
Artificial Intelligence with a Human Touch
AI is rapidly developing into a fundamental skill in nearly every field of work. BUas recognises the importance of this, but deliberately chooses an approach that goes beyond technological innovation. The choice for Claude for Education has been carefully considered. Key reasons included the educational possibilities of the learning mode, broad availability for all students and staff, transparent handling of data, and European data storage according to data protection guidelines. AI is deployed at BUas to enhance education, research and organisation while considering ethics, privacy and the human dimension.
AI Belongs in the Classroom - Under Clear Conditions
Generative AI is already part of students’ and lecturers’ daily work. Often, they use AI tools in a personal capacity. By offering Claude centrally, BUas ensures equal access and control over responsible use. The deployment seamlessly aligns with the institution's AI Ethics policy, which centres on careful handling of data, transparency and autonomy.
More Time for What Really Matters
Claude enhances the work of students, lecturers, researchers and staff. Not by taking over, but by creating space for deeper engagement and dialogue.
- Students gain an AI learning partner that is available 24/7. The learning mode actively encourages learning by asking questions, drawing out thought processes and helping discover connections. In this way, Claude supports students with research, study and developing critical thinking skills, in a manner that fits with contemporary, in-depth education.
- Lecturers receive support with course preparation and automating routine tasks, freeing up time to develop skills for facilitating AI use in class. This creates space for guiding students' critical thinking as they work with AI tools, while designing education that is current, creative and challenging.
- Researchers use AI as a tool to recognise patterns, understand literature and strengthen their methodology. This helps them generate new insights with greater precision.
- Staff members utilise AI in analysing documents, formulating policy and optimising communication. This makes decision-making more informed and strategic, with more room for substantive focus.
By supporting routine tasks, Claude for Education frees up space for what makes education special: human interaction, creativity and critical thinking.
European AI Conference in 2026
Next year, BUas, together with the University of Central Florida, will organise the conference Teaching & Learning with AI - Europe. For the first time, this international event will take place in Europe, on the Breda campus. The conference allows researchers, policymakers and lecturers to share ideas and experiences regarding the theme of AI in education.
