The BUas AI Strategy Compass wins second prize at UNESCO Global Forum in Thailand
Ines Springael, programme manager for Meaningful AI Endeavours at BUas, has won second prize for her research paper at the prestigious Global Forum on the Ethics of AI in Thailand. UNESCO and the Thai government organised this important forum.

Springael presented the AI Strategy Compass, a practical tool that helps organisations make well-informed and meaningful choices when implementing AI. At the forum, she connected with policymakers, researchers and visionaries from more than 70 countries, all sharing the same goal: ensuring AI is developed ethically in alignment with human values.
"This recognition means a great deal to me and BUas, as it demonstrates that our applied research at BUas is recognised internationally," says Springael. "The AI Strategy Compass didn't emerge from a ready-made model, but grew through iterative experiments, reflection and collaboration across departments. It helps organisations consciously shape their AI implementation, focusing on what truly matters. I'm pleased to see this work contributing to the global conversation about responsible AI use."
The research aligns seamlessly with the goals of KreativEU, the European consortium of which BUas is part. Within KreativEU, Springael coordinates the work package focused on developing AI systems that are designed from the outset to be ethically responsible and sustainable—proactive rather than reactive, and anchored in European values.
The Global Forum aimed to translate UNESCO's guidelines on AI ethics into concrete action. This aligns precisely with what BUas and KreativEU envision: technology that is not only intelligent, but also responsible and rooted in European values.
For Springael, this success particularly confirms that collaboration is crucial: "From local conversations to collaboration across Europe, responsible AI is shaped together."
