GoodMood Breda: from Speed Friending to Pub Quiz

Last week, Breda and our campus were buzzing with energy during GoodMood. Sports clinics, creative workshops, communal dinners, nature walks, and evening programmes – the schedule offered something for everyone. With activities in both Dutch and English, international and local students could fully participate.

Discovering cultures during the Week of the International Experience

During the Week of the International Experience (WotIE), which coincided with GoodMood, international connection took centre stage. During WotIE, educational institutions across the Netherlands – both MBO and HBO schools – are encouraged to organise free activities to connect, inspire and enthuse students, alumni, teachers, and staff, with a focus on discovering other cultures and perspectives.

The European Student Network (ESN) organised three cultural events on behalf of BUas and Avans:

  • Speed Friending in the Lighthouse on the BUas campus with questions like ’Which  do you prefer: kale or sauerkraut?’, ’Do you prefer to shower in the morning or evening?’
  • A Cultural Exchange Night at Mad Molly's where students discussed cultural differences from the classroom and spun a Wheel of Fortune with questions about different countries.
  • A Pub Quiz at Ned Kelly's full of laughter and friendly competition.

From coronavirus measure to community

GoodMood began during the corona pandemic as a response to increasing loneliness among students. The municipality of Breda, Avans University of Applied Sciences, BUas, Curio, and De Rooi Pannen joined forces. The initiative has since grown into an established event, with an important new step this year: the Premium account aims to transform GoodMood from a week of activities into an ongoing community programme that supports students throughout the year.
