A closer look at fan experiences

Augmented reality (AR) is becoming an increasingly popular leisure technology. This project investigates how AR affects football fans’ emotional responses and enjoyment during matches.

What was the goal of this research?

To investigate how pre-match augmented reality (AR) impacts football fans’ emotional responses and overall match experience.

What method was employed?

An experimental approach was used, comparing emotional and evaluative responses of fans who experienced AR content versus those who did not. The study explored fan experiences using a pre-match AR intervention, combining AR glasses and a smartphone app. The research took place in two settings: a live match at the PSV stadium and a simulated home-viewing environment on the BUas campus.

What findings did we uncover?

AR enhanced fan engagement in the home-like setting, suggesting added value in less stimulating environments. However, it had limited effect for fans in the stadium, where the live atmosphere already provides high stimulation. This shows the importance of viewing context in the design of AR experiences.
