Experts from across Europe shape the future of KreativEU’s AI Think Tank

In October 2026, experts from across the KreativEU alliance came together at Breda University of Applied Sciences for the Thematic School on ethical and sustainable AI. Over the course of the week, partners worked on the foundations of KreativEU’s Smart Sustainability Think Tank on AI: a shared body of expertise that will help universities, and ultimately society, make well-founded choices about AI.

A week of AI in Breda
The week opened with the Teaching and Learning with AI Europe conference, which brought an international group of educators and researchers to Breda. The conference set the scene for the thematic school, where the focus shifted from AI in education to the wider question of how AI should be shaped within, and beyond, the alliance.

Values and heritage as the starting point
What sets the think tank apart is its starting point. Rather than beginning with the technology, it takes Europe’s shared values and cultural heritage as its foundation and reasons from there towards ethical and sustainable AI. This approach reflects KreativEU’s mission as an alliance rooted in creativity, culture and heritage.

Joint contributions from across the alliance
During the thematic school, teams made up of at least two partner universities presented their own contributions to the think tank. The topics ranged from using AI to create greener campuses to building trustworthy digital heritage, as well as the values and heritage that should guide the development of AI. The discussions were open, and the variety of perspectives reflected the diversity of the alliance itself.

Consensus on the way forward
By the end of the week, the partners had reached consensus on the think tank’s working model. This agreement marks an important step towards a shared European body of expertise on AI, one that connects research, education and society.
