Strong international focus
How can BUas further shape its international campus? And how do you make sure that an international classroom is diverse and inclusive? How can education take shape in the learning communities? These are just a few of the themes addressed by the teaching assistants. “All our degree programmes have an international perspective and we want to be an internationally recognised educational institute. We want to prepare our students as well as possible for the international labour market. As a part of this ambition, partnering up with the Fulbright Center is a logical step,” says Elisabeth Minnemann, president of the Executive Board of Breda University of Applied Sciences.
English Teaching Assistant Program
The Fulbright Center has been running its English Teaching Assistant Program in the Netherlands for three years now. “We are pleased that we are now implementing this program with BUas. It is the only Fulbright English Teaching Assistant Program in the world, out of over seventy other countries with the programme, which also involves a research component. The students who come to the Netherlands through the program do not only share their knowledge, they also improve mutual understanding. They become part of a community,” Mattie Bekink, Executive Director of the Fulbright Center in the Netherlands, explains.
The teaching assistants were selected by the Fulbright Center, in collaboration with the teaching assistants’ Dutch host schools, and the Institute of International Education in New York. This was done on the basis of motivation, knowledge and experience, academic results, and teaching experience. On behalf of BUas, the SER International division will coordinate the project, in cooperation with researchers and lecturers Nicoline de Heus, Anna Voinova and a team of lecturers of English.
