In the first year, you will organise a small event yourself. You will discover how to create an experience within an event, but you will also learn how the field works. You will learn everything there is to know about organising an event, from A to Z. This includes, for example, the decor, catering, security, tickets, and programming. In this first year, you will find out whether this sector is a good fit for you.

The year is structured into four blocks:

**Block A: Introduction to Leisure & Events**You will become familiar with the sector, receive an introduction to doing research, and work on your communication skills.

**Block B: Business in Leisure & Events**You will delve into a leisure or event organisation and then get to work on things like guest experience, marketing and finance.

**Block C: Impact with Leisure & Events**You will work on a societal issue and explore the subject of Experience Design.

**Block D: Managing in Leisure & Events**You will delve into a leisure or event organisation and get to work with, among other things, the Six Capital Framework, where you will learn more about value creation, and you will play a management game.

During a block, you will be assessed in various ways. This may take the form of an oral examination, writing a report, completing a project assignment, or giving a presentation.

You will also learn more about project management, marketing, financial management, and communication in both Dutch and English.

At the end of the first year, you can choose whether to continue with the broad Leisure & Events Management programme or opt for one of the six [specialisations](<https://www.buas.nl/en/programmes/leisure-events-management#tab-specialisations >). It is also possible to transfer to the academic [Bachelor of Science Leisure Studies programme](<https://www.buas.nl/en/programmes/bachelor-of-science-leisure-studies >) in the second year

From the second year onwards, you will either attend the broad Leisure & Events Management programme or choose one of the six specialisations. Each specialisation is different. Whichever specialisation you choose, you will learn a great deal about the theory and practice of the leisure industry. You will work on real-life assignments for the professional field, attend guest lectures, and regularly visit companies.

You will also explore topics such as AI, sustainability, critical thinking, and ethics. Consider, for example, how to ensure that leisure activities are accessible to everyone, or how to limit the environmental impact of a festival.

During the programme, you can do two twenty-week placements or one forty-week placement at a company in the field. It is also possible to combine this with an exchange at a partner university abroad.

Within this programme, you have a fair amount of flexibility in choosing your own study pathway.

ExchangeStudying abroad is the perfect opportunity to push your boundaries. You build up an international network, learn a new language, and gain insight into intercultural differences. BUas works with universities all over the world, so as an exchange student you have plenty of options.

MinorWith a minor, you choose for yourself: do you want to specialise in your field or broaden your knowledge? You can take a [minor at BUas](https://www.buas.nl/en/minors), but you can also choose to do a minor at another Dutch university of applied sciences, or even abroad.

Pre-masterIn your final year of study, you may choose to attend the academic pre-master's track in [Strategic Business Management and Marketing (SBM)](https://www.buas.nl/en/programmes/pre-master-strategic-business-management-and-marketing-sbm). This pre-master will give you direct access to Master of Science programmes at top universities such as Maastricht, Rotterdam, Tilburg, Antwerp (B), and Warwick (UK). You can also move on to our university master's degree in [Leisure and Tourism Studies](https://www.buas.nl/en/programmes/master-of-science-leisure-and-tourism-studies). This way, you can earn a university master's degree in just five years – or even in four years, through the accelerated (three-year) track.

The Leisure & Events Management programme is very diverse, but its foundation is project-based work. You will work in groups of two to eight people. There are projects in which you will collaborate with students, lecturers, and industry professionals; these are known as learning communities. In addition to the projects, you will attend workshops, guest lectures, field trips, and study trips.

You may assume that you will be spending a full working week on your studies. Of course, this also depends on your approach and motivation. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by lecturers and coaches. In a personal and accessible environment, you will have the opportunity to develop yourself as fully as possible.

A typical weekContact moments are spread across all days of the week. There is variation in the teaching methods, so every week looks different.

**Student well-being**
BUas encourages and helps you to make the most of yourself, whatever your circumstances. Maybe you have a chronic illness, are a family carer, a competitive athlete, or juggle your studies with running your own business? Our study coaches, student counsellors and student psychologists are here to help. Do you need extra support or advice? Or extra facilities? Then take a look [at the options here](https://www.buas.nl/en/international-students/study-at-buas).

The specialisation areas are offered in English and in Dutch. Within the Dutch-taught variant, you will study a substantial part of the programme in Dutch, such as certain meetings and sessions, and creating documents and products. These experiences will help you discover which sub-sector or position best aligns with your ambitions and talents.

Attractions & Theme Parks ManagementIn this two-year specialisation, you will learn how to make attractions and theme parks stand out in an increasingly competitive sector. You will work together with students from the Tourism Management, Facility Management, and Leisure & Events Management programmes.

The programme includes collaboration with clients, use of a gaming facility, and study trips to visit sports and esports organisations.

We have an esports area on our campus called The Hive. Here, you can use the gaming and esports facilities with your fellow students during your studies, but also in your free time. Many job opportunities arise through work placements, guest lecturers or company visits. At BUas, you will automatically build your network through real-life projects for companies, presentations given by professionals, and trips to festivals, theme parks and pop music halls.

**How to build your network during your studies:**

- Real-life projects with external commissioners like ID&T, Efteling or local organisations;
- Industry experience: right from the start, in year 1, you will work for real employers. You will get practical experience by working for various events. You could help out, for example, at a sporting event, on BUas open days, in the logistics of events, selling merchandise, assisting artists backstage, and much more;
- Weekly presentations given by professionals from the event and leisure sector;
- Field trips to pop music halls, theme parks, museums, sporting events, and big event halls such as Ahoy or Jaarbeurs;
- Work placements at well-known organisations, so you will directly gain work experience and make contact;
- Study trips to cities like Barcelona, Rome and Berlin, where you will network with international professionals.

You start building a network at BUas and expand it into a valuable professional network during work placements, projects, and excursions.

    [Are you going to just organise festivals if you do Leisure & Events Management? ](#accordion-are-you-going-to-just-organise-festivals-if-you-do-leisure-events-management-) No, Leisure & Events Management is much broader than just organising festivals. You will learn to work across the whole leisure industry: theme parks, museums, sporting events, cultural projects, and business events. After the first year, you can choose from six specialisations, each covering a different part of the sector – from social innovation to business events – or you can choose the general specialisation, which gives you a broad range of topics of the whole sector.

**What you can work on:**

- Theme parks and attractions: offering guests an unforgettable experience at Efteling or Walibi through marketing, safety, and sustainability;
- Sporting events and esports: keeping fans involved and enhancing their experience during matches and tournaments
- Cultural events and museums: exhibitions, theatres, and cultural festivals for e.g. residents in neighbourhoods
- Business events: company parties, bringing new product to market, and conferences for big brands;
- Social projects: leisure activities for vulnerable groups through local city councils, charities or volunteer organisations;
- City redevelopment: creating lively places in neighbourhoods and industrial estates.

So you can choose music festivals, and completely different areas in the leisure sector.
