# Academic Year Opening 2026

On Friday 11 September 2026, Breda University of Applied Sciences opens the new academic year on Campus Breda. The afternoon takes place in the Chapel of the Horizon Building, from 14:30 to 16:45 hrs. Guests receive a warm welcome, followed by an address from Tom Berendsen, Minister of Foreign Affairs. His presence fits an institution that has always looked beyond borders.

 The opening explores how vulnerability and resilience shape strong leadership, in education and beyond. The programme shows how acknowledging uncertainty, rather than avoiding it, leads to more creative solutions and a more resilient community. BUas also presents its renewed strategic direction for the years ahead, built on three pillars: future ready professionals, applied research across Europe, and a caring campus community.

### The programme

Student host Lauryn Kimani opens the afternoon. Dr Jorrit Snijder, President of the Executive Board, welcomes guests and discusses the updated strategic direction and the choices that define BUas as a distinctive university of applied sciences.

The Power Speech comes from Dr Yoy Bergs and Michel Brokke, two BUas alumni from Hotel and Facility Management. They speak about vulnerability as a leadership quality: why acknowledging imperfection and uncertainty matters more than ever, in a world of rapid technological and geopolitical change.

The gathering closes with an informal drinks reception, offering guests the chance to discuss the ideas shared during the afternoon.

### A milestone year

11 September also marks 60 years of BUas. Alumni from six decades gather on campus that day for a separate celebration. Two events, one exceptional day.
